Georgian Co-Investment Fund (\u201cGCF\u201d) has announced its investment in a USD $40M greenhouse development project designed to boost the country\u2019s growing agriculture sector and reduce its reliance on imports. This is GCF\u2019s third investment since the launch in September 2013.<\/div>\n

The investment, which will see the development of a 35 hectare greenhouse in Gardabani of the Kvemo Kartli region, was announced by the CEO of GCF George Bachiashvili alongside the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili at the official opening of construction works. The attendants included high-level Government officials, representatives of Diplomatic Corps, International Organizations, Financial Institutions, local population and media.<\/div>\n

The construction of the greenhouse will permanently employ 80 people from the Gardabani area and when fully complete will have the capacity to grow over 15,000 tons of produce annually and contribute 435,000 Georgian Laris per annum to the local municipality. The project will also reduce the country\u2019s reliance on tomato imports by 30%.<\/p>\n

The project will be developed in two stages, with the first 12 hectares of construction to be completed by July 2015 with an annual output of 4,000 tons.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

GCF has two internationally respected co-investors on this project, the \u201cRichel Group\u201d, Europe\u2019s leader in greenhouse technology, and \u201cICES\u201d an industrial construction specialist in Georgia.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the project, Prime Minister of Georgia, Mr. Irakli Garibashvili said: \u201cThis significant investment from GCF means the development of national production, creation of new jobs and employment of local people which is of great importance for us. Furthermore, the implementation of the project will create competitive prices on the local market and will provide incentive for other foreign investors to invest more in the Agriculture sector of Georgia\u2019s economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Commenting on the project, the CEO of GCF, Mr. George Bachaishvili said: \u201cWe are proud to commence very important project which will be the biggest of its kind in South Caucasus. After its full implementation, the project will enable Georgia to cut its tomato imports by 30 percent. The total size of an investment is USD $40M which will be invested during 2 year period. Additionally 435,000 Georgian laris per year will be paid in taxes to the local municipality. The advantages of this project will positively influence not only the local population, but our trade balance generally and across many other economic parameters.\u201d<\/p>\n
